This folder contains correspondence sent to Senator John F. Kennedy and members of his staff from various individuals of Maryland, Massachusetts, and Michigan concerning the role of religion in the 1960 campaign, the prospect of a Catholic president, the distribution of anti-Catholic materials, and support for the Senator’s campaign. Also included are letters from the 6th grade class of Ward Elementary School in Newton, Massachusetts. Each student submitted their picture along with their letter to the Senator.

Kennedy and members of his staff from various individuals of Maryland, Massachusetts and Michigan concerning the role of religion in the 1960 campaign, the prospect of a Catholic president, the distribution of anti-Catholic materials, and support and opposition for the Senator’s campaign. Also of note is a memorandum from James Wine to Robert F. Kennedy discussing strategies for addressing the religious issue during the campaign.

This folder contains correspondence between James Wine, adviser on religious issues for Senator John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign; J. Arthur Lazell, Community Relations manager on religious issues for Senator Kennedy’s campaign; and various individuals from Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Ohio. Topics include the role of religion in the 1960 campaign, the prospect of a Catholic president, Senator Kennedy’s decision not to speak at a memorial service for four interfaith chaplains who died during World War II, and anti-Catholic statements made by religious leader Norman Vincent Peale.
