This folder contains Department of State cables and memoranda regarding Spain. Topics include speculation on a successor to Head of State General Francisco Franco, the resignation of John Davis Lodge as United States Ambassador to Spain, a request by Don Juan de Borbón (also known as the Pretender) for a meeting with President John F. Kennedy, and relations between Spain and Morocco. Also included in this folder is correspondence between President Kennedy and Spanish writer José María Gironella.

Photograph of the ceremony for the admission of a portrait of Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, the 17th Duke of Alba, by portraitist Michael A. Werboff to the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. The photograph accompanies a letter Mr. Werboff sent to Pamela Turnure, Press Secretary to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Caption in the top margin of photograph reads, "The ceremony of admission of the portrait of the XVIIth Duke of Alba to the Prado Museum of Madrid, Spain, December 13, 1960." Identifications of individuals in the photograph are written in the margin (L-R): "Sr. [Modesto] Lopez Otero, President of the Academy of Spain; F.J. Sánchez Cantón, Director of Prado Museum; [Michael] Werboff; U.S. Ambassador [to Spain] John D. Lodge; Cultural Attache U.S. Embassy Mr. [Jacob] Canter." Verso of photograph contains handwritten caption of, "This portrait of the XVIIth Duke of Alba was painted in Madrid in 1951 by Michael Werboff," and is stamped, "469."
