The event was televised from Tokyo, Japan. Yamashiro was the commander of the Japanese destroyer Amagiri that sank the Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109 commanded by John F. Kennedy during World War II. Yamashiro sent the photograph to President Kennedy with a letter dated January 20, 1961. An inscription on the verso of the photograph reads: "Nippon TV Network Corporation" (also known as Nihon Terebi). A second inscription is in Japanese.
