Model of the sod-buster plow presented to President John F. Kennedy to commemorate the centennial of the Homestead Act. A news release dated February 13, 1962, from the Department of the Interior declared that the commemoration launched a year-long national observance of the Homestead Act and other land anniversaries of 1962. Standing left to right are: Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, President Kennedy, Willis G. Scholl, President of the Farm Equipment Institute, Chicago, and C.R. Gutermuth, Chairman of the Public Domain Sesquicentennial Commission, Washington, D.C. President John F. Kennedy greeting ten Alaskan Eskimo and Indian electronic trainees in the Rose Garden of the White House. Standing on President Kennedy's left is Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall. The typed inscription on the verso of the photograph reads: “Illustration No. 2, The first ten Alaskan Natives to complete the 18-month RCA electronics training program, are shown being received by President Kennedy prior to reporting for employment on communications projects in Alaska.” This photograph is also in the Abbie Rowe (National Park Service) series, White House Photographs collection (see JFKWHP-AR7391-G).
