This folder contains memoranda regarding Cuba including the United States-backed invasion near the Bay of Pigs, Cuba’s standing with the OAS (Organization of American States), U.S. policy towards Cuba, and the administration of Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and plans for his removal from office. Also included in this folder is a memorandum to the President from Special Assistant Arthur M. Schlesinger titled, “Cuba: Political, Diplomatic and Economic Problems,” discussing operational planning for the Bay of Pigs invasion and relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union.

This folder contains correspondence and memoranda to and from Arthur Schlesinger, Special Assistant to the President. Topics include a trip to the United States by George Brown, Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party in Great Britain; invitations to Schlesinger for participation in various international conferences and seminars; and various foreign affairs issues. Also included in this folder are a draft of an article on communism, and a copy of a speech by Schlesinger on communism and the Cold War.

This folder contains memoranda to and from Arthur Schlesinger, Special Assistant to the President, on various foreign affairs issues. Also included in this folder are articles regarding former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Morgenthau Plan to control Germany after World War II; and a letter to Schlesinger from journalist and author Theodore H. White discussing White’s trip to Asia with comments on Communist China, Vietnam, and the U.S. Department of State.

This folder contains memoranda to and from Arthur Schlesinger, Special Assistant to the President, on various topics including an amendment to Executive Orders 10501 and 10816 for the automatic declassification of documents, the appointment of Rajeshwar Dayal as the United Nations (UN) Special Representative to Congo and its effect on United States and India relations, and a proposal to counteract the Soviet Union propaganda phrase of “peaceful coexistence.” Also included in this folder is a memorandum from Schlesinger to President John F. Kennedy titled, “How to Organize an Intelligence Service: Implications of the British Example.”

This folder contains materials collected by the office of President John F. Kennedy's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, concerning President Kennedy's address to the 18th General Assembly of the United Nations. In his speech the President discusses the recently signed treaty banning atmospheric nuclear weapons tests (later known as the Partial Test Ban Treaty or Limited Test Ban Treaty), remarking that peace may be attainable when two nations with incompatible ideologies negotiate with each other. The President famously asks, "Space offers no problems of sovereignty…Why, therefore, should man's first flight to the moon be a matter of national competition?" President Kennedy also explains that the task of maintaining peace and decreasing global tension must be shared by all nations. He proposes ways for the United Nations to increase and improve their efforts in developing countries, specifically focusing on health, human rights, agriculture, communication, and the environment. Materials in this folder include drafts by Special Assistant to the President and speechwriter Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., a press copy, and a reading copy of the speech with handwritten notations by the President, in addition to memoranda from Schlesinger and Adlai Stevenson, Ambassador to the United Nations.

This folder contains material collected by the office of President John F. Kennedy's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, concerning Cuba. Materials include a letter to President Kennedy from former United States Ambassador to Cuba Earl E.T. Smith, newspaper articles regarding Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, and memoranda to the President from Special Assistant Arthur M. Schlesinger concerning conversations with reporters about Cuba. Of note is a memorandum titled, “Cuba Policy.” Also included in this folder is an editorial from the exiled Cuban newspaper El Diario de la Marina titled, “Washington’s Leftwingers-Tragic Threat to the Future of Cuba.”

Also included in this folder are memoranda by Secretary Rusk, Director Murrow, and Special Assistant to the President Arthur Schlesinger, discussing the Soviet Union propaganda phrase “peaceful coexistence,” and offering proposed alternatives.
