Requesting Permission to Publish Portions of the Works of Ernest Hemingway
Copyright Information
The John F. Kennedy Library does not control the copyright of the Ernest Hemingway Collection. Holders of the copyright include the Hemingway Family and the Hemingway Foundation. Rights to publish other unpublished materials, and materials posthumously published in journals or anthologies, in the U.S. are jointly controlled by the Hemingway family and Hemingway Foundation, and both must approve requests.
Policies concerning permission for U.S. publication of material controlled by the Ernest Hemingway Foundation can be found through the Ernest Hemingway Foundation website.

The Ernest Hemingway Foundation will refer requests for foreign publication of the above material to Simon & Schuster, which represents the Hemingway family for all relevant permissions both domestic and foreign.
The Hemingway family is not currently granting permission to publish "unpublished works or derivative material" and explicitly asks that neither the family nor their literary rights manager, Michael Katakis, be contacted directly about permissions. If there is a legitimate question about permission, Simon & Schuster will refer the enquiry to Mr. Katakis.
